HORTICULTURE - Innovative Introductions - Apiculture

Since there are abundant flowering
plants and hives of Indian honey bees (Apis cerana-indica) in our farm, we brought in European honey bees (Apis melifera) to our farm from Latur district of Maharashtra.

European honey bees are heavy feeders and they require a lot of pollen along with nectar. In the first year, we planted Sunflower which provided abundant pollen with a good yield of honey.

Due to improper management and heavy monsoon showers during the months of June-September, bees started starving. Few colonies started migrating and the remaining vanished. Thus, our initial experiment with Apiculture was not so successful. We are however equipped with more knowledge and skills to experiment yet again.

At Shivalaya farms we possess a vast collection of plants same are showcased in our database.
