HORTICULTURE - Commercial Farming - Water Management

Managing water without any
wastage and utilizing every little drop is our main concern at Shivalaya Farm. Our main source of water is a Dam, located at a distance of 4 kms. from our farm.

We have taken a direct tap from the Dam to our farm’s underground tank. The head difference is only 3 meters.  But water reaches our farm without any pump, travelling four kms. through an 8” PVC underground line - a landmark project in its own right. Considering that our farm is surrounded by uneven and hilly region, this is a significant feat we have achieved with the help of a proper air valve and correct layout.

For distribution of water, water is pumped to the overhead tank located at topmost point of farm. Manifold assemblies divert this water to different parts of the farm. Crops like Coconut, Areca nut and Sapota are irrigated twice a week in winters and thrice during summers. An average of 70 liters of water is used per plant per round of irrigation. Mulching under each plant is provided to avoid evaporative losses.

Planning is essential for efficient water management systems. Hence, every week we prepare a chart per crop and gate valves to be operated - considering power cut time and inter culture operation time.

The water that overflows from the underground tank is used for Pisciculture. Total of 2 acre land is utilized for fish farming.

At Shivalaya farms we possess a vast collection of plants same are showcased in our database.
