HORTICULTURE - Commercial Farming - Farm Produce

At Shivalaya Farm, we mainly cultivate
major plantation crops of the Konkan area such as the Coconut, Areca nut and Orchard crops such as Cashew, Mango, Sapota and intercrops like Banana, Pineapple and Papaya.

Red lateritic soil which is slightly acidic in nature is suitable for cultivation here. The climate is suitable for growing many tropical and subtropical fruits and it favours to produce rich quality fruits of warm and humid region.

Coconut
Coconut holds immense ritual significance in the Indian culture. And in the Konkan area, it is not only in demand for the rituals, but also is an inseparable part of Konkan cuisine.

Areca Nut
Nut of Areca palm is used prominently in Hindu rituals and is the second major plantation crop around the tropical coast. It is planted at 2.75 X 2.75 m spacing.

Orchard Crops
Konkan’s Ratnagiri district is known world wide for its delicious Alphonso mangoes. But other crops like Cashew, Sapota and Banana are equally prominent here at Shivalaya Farm and are grown commercially.

Spices
This is a prominent intercrop cultivated amongst the Coconut and Areca nut crops in our farm. Two Pepper vines are trained on each Palm as intercrops. The variety culticated is known as panniyur – I.

Other Crops
Due to the appropriate Konkan weather, Papaya flourishes very well in our farm. Cultivated primarily as an intercrop in Sapota orchard, we are currently reducing the intercropping of Papaya as other main crops are growing.

At Shivalaya farms we possess a vast collection of plants same are showcased in our database.
