HORTICULTURE - Innovative Introductions

In every facet of life, there are things and activities, ideas and philosophies that deserve special mention. At Shivalaya Farm, we reserve this special mention for very special things- those that are closest to our heart and come with a ‘rare’ and an ‘exclusive’ tag. Some exotic fruit crops, some of our unique practices and original and creative ideas have been elaborated upon here. To know more, click on the topic that interests you.

Exotic Fruits
The passion of doing something new and hunger for plant research has made our collection at Shivalaya Farm, a landmark collection of tropical fruits and ornamental plants.

Aquaculture
Due to ample availability of clean water and an inclination in this region for sea food, emerged the idea of Pisciculture. Initially we built a 2000 Sq meter pond and introduced Rohu, Cutla and prawns to it.

Multilayer Cropping
For the process of multilayer cropping, cropping combinations are done in such a way that main crops and intercrops grow comfortably without having adverse effect on each other, on the contrary, helping each other to achieve better growing conditions.

Lakhibaug in Coconut
We have planted Coconuts on 7.5 X 7.5 m spacing at four corners of the square plot. Black Peppers have been made to trail on these Coconut plants.

Areca nut inter cropping
With Areca nut plantations, we have criss-crossed the combination of Nutmeg and Cinnamon plantations as shown.

Vermicultue
Since we have a lot of farm waste like Banana plants waste, shredded leaves from many trees and cow dung, we have introduced earth worms ...

Apiculture
Since there are abundant flowering plants and hives of Indian honey bees (Apis cerana-indica) in our farm, we brought in European honey bees (Apis melifera) to our farm from Latur

Organic Recycling
Every farm produces a lot of farm waste. Leaves of plants decompose easily, but pruned branches, Coconut leaves, fronds etc. take a lot of time to decompose.

Conservation Ideas
Soil Conservation: Konkan is a high rainfall zone. Every year, million tones of soil get deposited into the sea. Formation of 1 inch layer of soil takes thousand years.

At Shivalaya farms we possess a vast collection of plants same are showcased in our database.
