Shivalaya Farm
is located on the coastal belt of Maharashtra in India (160 51' N 730 31' E) known as the Konkan region, located between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats of India.
The climate here is warm and humid. Temperature varies from 15 0 C in winters (December) and 38 0 C in summers. The humidity here in rainy season is 100%, 30 % during the months of February and March and 60 to 70% throughout the rest of the period. Annual rainfall received is 2500-3000 mm, almost all of it received in four months (June-September).
Shivalaya Farm enjoys soil that is red lateritic, sandy loam and slightly acidic in nature.The farm showcases about 1000 different species of plants. Of these, 400 are fruit species and their varieties. Many plants have been collected from various parts of Asia and have been nurtured here. Other agricultural activities such as Aquaculture, Apiculture, Vermiculture and Organic Recycling are also successfully carried out here. Various noble practices such as soil, water, power and ecological conservation are observed here, apart from following optimum land utilization techniques, intercropping and using progressive farm management systems.
Under the able guidance of Mrs. Jayashree Krishna Tendulkar, the owner of the farm and managed by the Farm Manager and Caretaker Mr. Deepak Ghamat, Shivalaya Farm has emerged today as a major boutique of tropical plants in India.
