The Plumeria is a colourful
tropical plant associated with temples in both Hindu and Buddhist cultures. They are also used in pagodas and in rituals all along the tropical regions of the world.
Plumerias bloom in rainbow colours, each colour of Plumeria having its own unique fragrance. Some Plumerias smell sweet, while another colour can smell like Jasmine, Peaches or even Citrusy. Not only do they bloom in different colours and smell distinct, they are also available in different shapes and sizes. Plumeria Rubra is the most commonly found rainbow coloured Plumeria. It has a good seed set and due to its open pollination nature, its natural colour mixing is profound. Its seedlings flower within six month, making this variety an obvious choice to experiment with to create more varieties.
The Plumeria can be grown anywhere in the world. It can be a 20 foot tree if you live in the warmer climates or can be a fantastic potted plant for your patio deck, screen pool, balcony or driveway. The Plumeria only grows to the size of the pot. Bring the Plumeria out when it warms up next spring, and it blooms bigger than the year before. The Plumeria is one of the most low maintenance plants in the world. It is drought tolerant and can be grown in full sun or partial sun. Few species and variety are evergreen and most are deciduous. Some hybrids are perpetual in flowering, most of the varieties bloom during the warmer months of April – may in India.
At Shivalaya Farm, we have collected Plumeria from various locations in India and other tropical parts of the world like Thailand, USA etc. For importing Plumeria, we have registered it in GOI plant quarantine list. We have systematically planted various varieties of Plumeria that have all begun flowering now. We have started systematic collection of seeds, grafting of multi-colour Plumerias on single stock and propagation but cutting. Also, the preparation of new hybrids of Plumeria is under progress.
